The Hidden Half of the Fertility Equation

“Have you had your partner checked?” It’s often one of the last questions asked in the fertility journey, but it should probably be one of the first. Here’s why: male factors actually contribute to about half of all infertility cases.

In my years of practice at Valley Acupuncture and Wellness, I’ve seen countless couples who’ve spent months, sometimes years, focusing exclusively on the woman’s reproductive health, only to discover the issue was with sperm quality all along.

Conventional medicine offers several approaches for male infertility: hormonal medications, varicocele repair surgery, or assisted reproductive technologies like ICSI. These work for many couples, but they come with downsides: high costs, potential side effects, and sometimes an uncomfortable medical experience for men who may already feel vulnerable about their fertility.

How Our Methods Actually Improve Male Fertility

“But how could needles and tiny currents possibly help sperm?” I hear this question a lot in my practice. It sounds counterintuitive until you understand the science behind it. At Valley Acupuncture and Wellness, I use a powerful combination of acupuncture and Frequency-Specific Microcurrent (FSM)—a therapy I learned directly from its pioneer, Dr. Carolyn McMakin, who continues to be my teacher and mentor.

Here’s what’s actually happening when we treat male fertility with our methods:

1. Boosting Those Swimming Champions

Let’s talk about sperm quality. The truth is, it’s not just about having “enough” sperm they need to be strong swimmers with the right shape and vitality to reach and penetrate an egg.

I remember working with Mark (name changed), who came in after a devastating semen analysis showing only 2% normal morphology. After eight weeks of twice-weekly treatments, his follow-up test showed 8%—a game-changing improvement that led to a natural pregnancy just two months later.

Research backs up what I’ve seen in my clinic: regular acupuncture treatments often lead to:

  • Higher sperm counts (more swimmers in the pool)
  • Better motility (stronger, more directed swimming)
  • Improved morphology (healthier-looking sperm under the microscope)

2. Getting Hormones Back in Sync

Men have complex hormonal systems too, though we talk about them less. When testosterone, FSH, and LH get out of whack, sperm production suffers.

One client, a 34-year-old IT guy with borderline low testosterone, described acupuncture as “rebooting my system.” His hormone panel gradually normalized over three months of treatment without medication all while he took. naps on my treatment tables.

The science here is fascinating: acupuncture seems to communicate directly with the brain’s hormone control center (the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis), helping to bring down sky-high FSH (often a sign the body is trying too hard to stimulate underperforming testicles), balance LH for better testosterone production, and support natural testosterone without the risks of replacement therapy.

3. The Stress-Fertility Connection Nobody Talks About

The conversation often goes like this: “Just relax and it will happen!” (Cue eye-rolling from every couple struggling to conceive.)

But here’s the frustrating truth, stress DOES impact fertility, especially for men. Under chronic stress, the body shunts resources away from “non-essential” functions like reproduction.

Acupuncture offers something unique here: measurable reductions in cortisol (the primary stress hormone), increased blood flow to the pelvic area (which stress restricts), and improvements in libido and sexual function (let’s be honest, scheduled baby-making sex isn’t always exciting). And guys, we never stick needles, “down there.”

The needle sensations trigger endorphin release, nature’s own stress reliever. Many men in my practice fall asleep during treatments and report the best rest they’ve had in months.

4. Bringing Fresh Blood to Where It Matters

Healthy sperm need oxygen and nutrients delivered through blood vessels. Poor circulation means poor sperm production, it’s that simple.

One surprising study I’ve shared a time or two with clients used specialized ultrasound to measure testicular blood flow before and after acupuncture. Within minutes of needling specific points (particularly one called ST29), blood flow increased by nearly 20%.

For men with sedentary jobs, which, describes most of us these days, this circulation boost can be particularly beneficial. More oxygen reaches sperm-producing cells, there’s better delivery of nutrients, and improved temperature regulation (testicles need to be slightly cooler than body temperature for optimal sperm production).

5. Fighting the Inflammatory Fire

Here’s something they don’t teach in sex ed: inflammation is toxic to sperm. Whether from infections, environmental toxins, or diet, inflammation creates a hostile environment for developing sperm.

I worked with a client who had mild, chronic prostatitis, not enough to cause pain, but enough to impact his fertility. After addressing the inflammation and dietary changes he and his wife conceived naturally. It was even before she started her IVF medications.

Our methods work here by activating the body’s own anti-inflammatory pathways, clearing heat and congestion in the reproductive area (in traditional terminology), neutralizing the free radicals that damage sperm DNA, and dramatically reducing inflammatory cytokines (FSM can reduce inflammatory markers like IL-6 and TNF-α by 60-75% in a single session).

6. The Power of Frequency-Specific Microcurrent (FSM)

One of our most effective tools for male fertility that nobody else in the area offers is Frequency-Specific Microcurrent therapy. FSM uses extremely gentle electrical currents (in microamperes, so tiny you typically don’t feel them) tuned to specific frequencies that resonate with different tissues and conditions in the body.

Having studied directly with Dr. Carolyn McMakin, the developer of modern FSM, I’ve witnessed remarkable changes in reproductive health using this technology. Here’s how it works for male fertility:

FSM delivers a cellular energy boost, increasing ATP (cellular energy) production by 3-5 times. In the testes, this means sperm-producing cells have more energy to function optimally. I like to call it “charging the batteries” of sperm production.

The treatment enhances blood flow; during FSM sessions, tissues warm and soften as microcirculation improves. Better blood flow to the testes means more oxygen and nutrients for developing sperm. One client described it as a “pleasant warmth” in the lower abdomen during treatment. And we apply the current to the abdomen, not “down there”.

Perhaps most exciting is FSM’s sperm activation effect. Laboratory research shows that gentle microcurrent can increase sperm motility by 30-40%. In practical terms, this means sperm that swim better and have a better chance of reaching the egg.

FSM also supports hormone balance without drugs. It helps regulate the nervous system, which indirectly supports hormone balance. Many men report better sleep and reduced stress after FSM sessions, both crucial for maintaining healthy testosterone levels.

“But Where’s the Evidence?” — What Science Actually Says

As both an acupuncturist and someone with a business background, I understand the skepticism. You want more than ancient theory, you want modern proof. Fair enough!

The research on acupuncture for male fertility has exploded in the past decade. Here’s what we know:

  • A 2018 controlled study showed men receiving twice-weekly acupuncture for 5 weeks had a 65% increase in total motile sperm count compared to just 16% in the sham acupuncture group
  • German researchers found that real acupuncture significantly outperformed placebo needles in improving sperm motility, especially in men with severe issues
  • A meta-analysis combining results from 500 patients concluded that acupuncture measurably improves both concentration and motility parameters

What’s particularly notable is that acupuncture showed ZERO adverse effects across all these studies. Compare that to the side effect profiles of fertility medications, and you can see why some reproductive urologists are now starting to refer patients to acupuncturists.

I attended a fertility conference last year where a reproductive endocrinologist admitted: “We don’t fully understand why, but the patients getting acupuncture alongside conventional treatment have better numbers and seem to conceive faster. Something is definitely happening.”

The Magic Points (Yes, We’re Actually Quite Specific)

“Do you just stick needles anywhere?” Absolutely not! And again, we never stick needles in “there.” Male fertility treatment follows specific protocols that have been refined over thousands of years and validated by modern research.

For the acupuncture geeks out there (or to help you understand what’s happening during treatment), here are the points I use most often:

  • CV4: Located about two inches below the belly button, this point has been shown to increase testosterone production in clinical studies. Almost every male fertility treatment includes this powerful point.
  • BL23: Found on either side of the lower back, these points correspond directly to kidney function, which traditional medicine links to reproductive essence. I often use gentle electrical stimulation here to maximize effect.
  • SP6: On the inner lower leg, this is fertility’s “command central”—it influences all three reproductive channels in the body.
  • DU4: The “life gate fire” point between lumbar vertebrae stimulates the deepest reserves of energy. Many men report feeling a pleasant warming sensation from this point.

Each treatment at Valley Acupuncture is completely customized. Just as no two fertility journeys are identical, no two treatment plans are exactly the same.

Where Acupuncture Fits in Your Fertility Journey

Acupuncture isn’t an either/or proposition—it’s a “yes, and” approach that complements whatever path you’re on:

For Couples Just Starting Out

If you’re early in your fertility journey, acupuncture offers a non-invasive first approach. I’ve worked with numerous couples who conceived naturally after 3-6 months of consistent treatment before ever needing to see a reproductive specialist.

Alongside Medical Interventions

Already working with a fertility doctor? Perfect! Our treatments play well with others.

The IVF Support Team

For my IVF couples, timing is everything. Since sperm take approximately 72-90 days to fully develop, I recommend male partners begin acupuncture at least 3 months before the planned egg retrieval.

Research suggests men who receive acupuncture before providing sperm samples for IVF have better fertilization rates and sometimes dramatically so. One study found a 26% increase in fertilized embryos when men had acupuncture.

The Whole-Person Approach

In my clinic, I never offer “just acupuncture.” My comprehensive male fertility plan typically includes acupuncture and FSM treatments targeted supplement recommendations based on specific parameters (different formulas for count vs. motility issues), anti-inflammatory nutrition coaching, lifestyle adjustments (particularly around heat exposure—those laptops aren’t doing your partner any favors!), stress management techniques, and detoxification support to clear reproductive organs of environmental chemicals.

Tom & Marissa

Pursuing IVF after male factor diagnosis, their first retrieval resulted in only two viable embryos from 11 eggs. Before their second retrieval, Marissa convinced Tom to come in for treatments with me. Result: eight viable embryos from 10 eggs—a dramatic improvement in fertilization rate. Their son just turned one.

Ready to Explore Our Unique Approach?

Let’s be clear: our methods aren’t magic. They can’t fix genetic issues. But for many men with unexplained or mild male factor infertility, sub-optimal sperm parameters, stress-related fertility challenges, normal-but-could-be-better semen analysis results, previous failed fertility treatments, and environmental toxin exposure affecting fertility, our combined acupuncture and FSM approach offers a research-backed, side-effect-free option worth considering.

When I first trained with Dr. Carolyn McMakin to learn FSM therapy, I immediately saw its potential for fertility work. The ability to treat reproductive tissues and FSM’s effects on stress management it opened up possibilities that weren’t available with acupuncture alone. Now, combining these modalities creates a synergy that often yields results better than either therapy individually.

At Valley Acupuncture and Wellness, we specialize in reproductive health and work alongside conventional medicine, not in opposition to it. Our male fertility patients receive individualized treatment plans that evolve as their parameters improve.

The ideal timeline? Given the sperm development cycle, we recommend men start our combined protocol at least 3 months before actively trying to conceive or providing samples for IVF/IUI. Again, our methods aren’t magic, we need time for them to work. And once again, we NEVER stick needles, “down there.”

Something unique about our practice: In my experience, it’s almost always the woman who initially comes in for the fertility consultation and it’s usually alone. I always encourage her to have her partner see me also and offer to treat him for 10-12 sessions at no additional charge. Only about half of my patients take me up on this offer. Having both partners treated simultaneously can make all the difference in the world for difficult fertility cases.
